What kind of driving license do I need to drive in Japan?

I would like to know how to book a rental car.

Please make a booking in advance and bring appropriate documents on the day at the outlet. *Unless you have a booking, we might not be able to offer you a vehicle depending on car availability. For more details, please check this page.

Is there a cancellation fee?

If a reservation is cancelled, the following cancellation fees will apply. Also, please be aware that your reservation will be cancelled if one hour has passed since your reservation is to have started and we haven’t heard from you.

7 days before your rental date –> Free
3 – 6 days before your rental date –> 20% of basic fee
1 – 2 days before your rental date –> 30% of basic fee
Day of your rental –> 50% of basic fee

*The maximum cancellation fee is 6,480 yen (tax included).

Your rental outlet will contact you about paying for the cancellation fee.

How do you change a reservation?

The following are the steps to change a reservation.

1. Click [View/Change/Cancel a Reservation] on the Nissan Rent a Car official website.
2. Enter your reservation number and registered first / last name on the reservation search page and click [Search].
3. Click [Change] within the list displayed on the search result page.
4. Check the reservation details you would like to change and click [Change].
5. Enter the necessary information by following the on-screen instructions to change the reservation.

*Please contact your rental outlet if you would like to change your reservation within two days of your rental.

How do I cancel a reservation?

The following are the steps to cancel a reservation. 1. Click [View/Change/Cancel a Reservation] on the Nissan Rent a Car official website. 2. Confirm the reservation details you would like to cancel and click [Cancel]. 5. How do I extend my rental period (time)?

In certain cases, we may not be able to extend your rental period (time). First, confirm with your rental outlet.

What should I do if I have a flat tire?

First, please stop your vehicle in a safe location if you are driving. Then contact your rental outlet.
*If you have a flat tire in a vehicle without a spare tire, use the flat tire repair kit. Please contact the outlet you rented the vehicle for directions on how to use it.
You will be responsible for the cost of replacing the tire, repairing the damaged tire, the cost of the tire or for any lost wheel caps.

How can I pay for my rental?

As a rule, we require a credit card for payment.
When renting the vehicle, you will pay the rental fee according to the hours in the agreement. Additional costs will be added to your bill upon your return such as overtime, cost of gas, equipment usage, sales tax, etc. The following payment methods are available.
A credit card is required for payment for the following classes: P8 and P9 classes, PH8 – PHX classes, E5 class, WH4 class, and W6 class.
The following classes can be paid in cash: P0 – P6 classes, PH2 class, W4 class, RV0 and RV1 classes.
A credit card is also required for payment for other classes, as a rule.
*An authorization will be placed on your credit card when picking up the vehicle, as a rule. The payment will be made upon return.

If paying with cash:
You will need to present your driver’s license in addition to one of the following documents.
(1) Nissan Rent a Car membership card (Nissan Rent a Car Business Card / 23 Bonus Club Card)
(2) Health insurance card
(3) Student / Employee ID card (with photo)
(4) Passport
(5) Receipt for a public utility, etc. to confirm your current address (issued within the last two months)
(6) Pension book
(7) Basic resident register card
(8) Special permanent resident certificate
(9) Residence card
If you are not a member of Nissan Rent a Car, we will also confirm your cell phone calls.
*The following classes can be paid in cash: P0 – P6 classes, W2 – W5 classes, RV0 and RV1 classes, M class, V class, C class and T class
*The 23 Bonus Club Card you receive when becoming a member on the same day cannot be used as identification.

Do I need to full the fuel /petrol tank when I return the car?

Yes. We provide full tank when you pick up the car and we would like you to full the fuel /petrol tank before you return the car at outlet. Please ask outlet staff about type of fuel /petrol. If you need any other information, please check this page.

How much for renting a car?

It depends on the rental period, car class, optional items, and return outlet you prefer. Please check this page for more details.

How big the trunk size of a car is? Also how many passengers does the car accept?

Do you have ETC card rental?

We have limited outlet handle ETC card rental. Please check the ETC card rental requirement and fee at this page.

What is the Hokkaido Expressway Pass (HEP)?

Does rent a car has GPS?

We have Japanese GPS as standard equipment basically. Please choose an option for English, Chinese or Korean GPS at online reservation form.

Can I connect iPhone or other music device?

We have USB port or AUX port in the car. Please note that it depends on the car you rent and outlets so that make sure to ask outlet about it when you pick up your car. (some vehicle doesn’t have it)

Do you have any manual transmission vehicles?

Passenger vehicles (P, PH, RV classes) and wagons (W class) are automatic transmission. (*We do not have any manual transmission passenger vehicles.)

What should I do if I have an accident?

If you have an accident, immediately stop driving and perform the following.

(1) Seek help for anyone that is injured.
Once anyone injured has been helped, promptly move the rental vehicle to a location away from traffic.
(2) Please contact the police from there (call 110).
Both the perpetrator and victim are required to notify the police. A certificate of an accident will be required at a later date, so please go through with the necessary process.
(3) Please contact your rental outlet from there.
If your rental outlet is closed, please contact the following phone number.

“Sompo Japan Insurance” Accident Report Center (Toll free: 0120-256-110)

*It will be handled as an accident regardless of the size of the damage or whether anyone else is involved.
*The loanee (driver) is liable for damages under the law.
*It will not be covered by insurance if the necessary procedures are not followed.

If your rental vehicle breaks down:
If you feel there is a problem with the vehicle, please contact your rental outlet.
If your rental outlet is not open, please contact the nearest 24 hour Nissan Rent a Car outlet.

I lost (or damaged) the car key. What should I do?

If you have lost or damaged the car key, it will not be covered by the insurance & coverage system. In the event you lose or damage the key, it will be your responsibility to replace it, so please be careful.

I would like to know about Japanese toll / high way.

Basically Japanese toll / high way charge the fee. *You can pay by cash or credit card which is depends on the system of exiting gates. If you have ETC card, you can pass through ETC tollgate to pay. Please check for more details at this page.
