Valid Driver's Licenses in Japan

For Customers Driving in Japan with an International Driving Permit

To drive in Japan the following type of permit and other documents are required. Please be sure you have them ready.

We will check your driver's license and other documents on the day you come in to an outlet to pick up your car. If you are not legally allowed to drive in Japan, we will not be able to rent a vehicle to you.

1.International Driving Permit issued by a Country that is Party to the Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva Convention) and Passport

A driving permit can be used for a period of up to one year after entering Japan, but the International Driving Permit itself is valid for one year from the date of issue.

(1) International Driving Permit

International Driving Permits are issued by both the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, but you can only drive in Japan with an International Driving Permit issued by the Geneva Convention.

How to Check

The following text will be displayed on the front cover of the permit:
「Convention on International Road Traffic of September 19, 1949」

Please be sure that the permit has not expired.

Even if a permit is issued by a country that is party to the Geneva Convention, if the above text is not displayed, the permit is invalid.

If the text is not in English, please check for this date: 1949.9.19

A displayed date of 8 November 1968 is a Vienna Convention-issued permit and is not valid in Japan.

How to Check the Type of Vehicle You Are Permitted to Drive

On the photo page of the International Driving Permit are the classifications A, B, C, D, and E, which indicate different classes of vehicles.
The classes you are permitted to drive will be stamped.

Vehicle with seating capacity of 9 or less: B stamp

Vehicle with seating capacity of 10 or more: D stamp

(2) Passport

Please be sure that you have been in Japan for less than one year.

2. Foreign driver's license issued by a country with whom Japan has a bilateral agreement (a certified Japanese translation issued by an authorized organization must be attached to the license.) plus passport

Can be used by people from these countries: Monaco, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Republic of Estonia, and Taiwan

A foreign driver's license can be used to drive in Japan for up to one year upon entering Japan or until the expiration of the license, whichever comes first.

(1) Foreign driver’s license (a certified Japanese translation issued by an authorized organization must be attached to the license.)

Please be sure that the license has not expired.
A certified translation into Japanese can be issued by the embassy or consulate of one's country in Japan or by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).

How to Check the Type of Vehicle You Are Permitted to Drive

You may not have a license to drive a large vehicle. Please be sure you are legally licensed before making a reservation.

(2) Passport

Please be sure that you have been in Japan for less than one year.
